Fun with unemployment
Apr. 7th, 2008 11:18 pmYesterday morning, I sat down to do my weekly certification for my unemployment. No big deal, except that this time the website tells me that I can't file and that I have to go in to my local office to take care of the issue.
Now, I'm suspecting that the reason I've gotten disabled is because last week I forgot to do mine on time, as happened a few weeks back. According to the book "If you get behind in filing for two weeks you must report in person to your local...office." So, I'm figuring this is why mine certification has been disabled.
This morning, I was ready to go in time to go by the unemployment office before going to class. When I got there and told them what was going on, I was informed that the reason I was disabled on weekly certs was because last weeks claim showed that I'd made more money the week before than my unemployment would pay me and so they assumed I had gotten a full-time job and dumped me off of unemployment. Turns out, they don't handle that at the local office anymore and you have to call a toll free number, only the number I was told to call is the number for filing your claims. Got the number I needed to call when I called there. Problem? At the other number, the menus aren't that clear and everything seems to be done with automated menus. I've yet to find a way to get to speak to a real person. Not only that, unless I call extremely early in the morning, looks like I won't get to do anything about it until Wednesday because the lines are jammed.
Apparently the state of Tennessee's Unemployment Commission has either never heard of contract jobs or they have decided not to make provision for people who might get a contract that only lasts one week or only has you working one or two days a month. When I was on unemployment in NC, I had a contract that lasted one week, paid better than my unemployment, but they didn't assume that I'd gotten a full-time job. Can we say this is just annoying? And have I ever stated just how much I hate automated menus?
