I have a job!!!
Jan. 13th, 2009 10:42 amMost of you are aware that I spent most of last year on unemployment and that I finally got a temp job that was supposed to, hopefully, lead to a permanent position. Haven't really posted much since then because we don't have access to personal email nor to sites like My Space or Live Journal from our work computers. After spending 8-12 hrs at work on a computer, I really don't feel like doing much on one when I'm at home, hence, no updates.
I'd been working as a Tier I agent 10 hours a day Mon-Thurs. Right after Christmas, I took over for a Tier II agent who moved into a more permanent position with the regular service desk. This entailed a change in work schedule, so I started working noon to 9 Mon-Fri. Christmas day I found out that our desk was supposed to be shutting down Jan. 16. I had been under the impression that our desk could possibly stick around until mid-Feb and no one had ever told me different until then. So, panic ensues because I've not got a job lined up for when this ends and we've not really been told about many positions coming available.
At the last minute, I put in for a job with the regular service desk. Turns out they had two openings plus an opening or two on the accounts processing desk. I've also applied for a couple of other positions at SAIC, but haven't heard back on any of those yet. Was interviewed for the position with the regular service desk and it will require me to take at least a $2/hr paycut, but those of us coming from the Trusted Desktop service desk would have seniority because we've been working for SAIC longer than the people that are currently on the regular desk, so we get choice of shifts. Yesterday, when I showed up at work, my cubicle mate, Donna, told me to check my email and make a call before going available on the phones. She and I had gotten an email from the regular service desk manager asking us to call him, at which time he offered us the positions with his desk. This means that I'll still be a temp for a bit when I move to that desk, but at least I have a job that won't be going anywhere anytime soon. I won't have extra money to spend on much, and getting the motorcycle I want may take a little longer to save for, but I'll be able to continue moving forward with my plans, even if it means taking a little longer. Oh, and the panic over not having a job when the Trusted Desktop goes away is still slowly disapating :)
